Pastor Corner:

This year at the Easter Vigil, we will not have anyone to be baptized. In the past four years we have had children who were older than seven years old whom we initiated into the Church. I have noticed that we have not had any adults who expressed an interest in the Catholic faith. I have to wonder why we have not been able to attract people to the faith. As baptized people we are given the responsibility of being Missionary Disciples. This means we must be willing to share our faith with others. I think the struggle is that all of us have been taught that faith is a private matter that is kept to oneself. When we are out and about with our daily tasks, we tend to never mention anything concerning our faith to anyone. The confusion I think we all have is when do I talk about my faith. When you are with friends or work associates do you ever mention that as part of your weekend plans is to go to Church? If allowed, can you have a Catholic symbol on your clothing or a picture of a saint in your work? Does your home have religious art, so visitors know you are Catholic? On Good Friday, do you ask to leave early to attend services? These are just a few ideas that might be conversation starters. Conversation starters are a way to begin to have an open and honest discussion with another person about faith. Everyone who was baptized later in life usually begins their faith journey through a relationship with a Catholic. Our Catholic faith is a relationship with Jesus Christ. It is through our relationships with others that we can begin to built the openness to another that we can invite them to develop their own relationship with Jesus Christ through the Catholic Church.
